March Wrap Up

 Hi there,

March is over and we have moved on to April. Somehow March seemed endless to me, but now I'm ready to enjoy April. It was a very good reading month, with quite some books, and a lot of great ratings. Let's get started:

I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy: A memoir that has been hyped since it's release. I have to be honest I thought I wasn't going to like it simply because I am not a typical non-fiction or memoir reader, but... I loved this. In the memoir McCurdy talks about her time as a child actor, how her mother abused her, her time on ICarly and after. It was such an interesting read. She talks about the abuse with an appropriate amount of humor. I flew through the pages, and I would say: if you're not a non-fiction person, just like me, please try this out! (5 stars)

Orbital by Samantha Harvey: This science-fiction won the 2024 Booker Prize, which caused it to land on all of my socials. The people I follow, and whose opinions I care about, had mixed feelings about it. Some loved it, some hated it. I ended up in the first category. The book follows six astronauts circling earth. We follow them for one day; their thoughts, feelings and dreams. It is a short read, but it took me a few pages to get used to the writing. After that I was all in for it. I loved how we got to know six individuals so well within such a short time. (4.5 stars)

Strong Female Character by Fern Brady: This was another memoir, this time for my discord bookclub. It focuses on Brady's late autisme diagnosis and how she got to that point. The book sounded amazing, but it ended up disappointing me and the other members of the bookclub. It felt messy, undedited, and rude about others constantly. I felt like an editor should have gone over this a few more times. Which didn't feel great since I had had this book quite high on my tbr for a while. In the end I still do not really know what to rate it. (2 or 3 stars. Probably more towards two)

A Man Called Ove by Frederik Backman: I was a little scared starting this, simply because it is such a beloved book. Well, there was no need to be afraid; it is beloved for a good reason. The first page made me instantly fall in love with Ove. He is such a grumpy but sweet man; he simply has his reasons. The neighbours are each and everyone of them amazing. They are sweet, funny, and know how to deal with Ove. The book made me laugh, it made me cry (so many times), it had everything a book needs. And gosh that ending, my heart. (5 stars)

The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien: This was a reread I had been looking forward to for a while. Well, it was the most satisfying book to read this month. It made me feel so happy to reread this book. Connecting with the characters again, being reminded about the differences between the books and films, the atmosphere, the writing style. I love every little aspect of it. And now I'm back in my Lord of the Rings obsession. I'm pretty sure I'll watch the films again soon! (5 stars, duh)

Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins: This book was one I have been waiting for since long before it was announced. This was the book I was hoping for when I read the original trilogy for the first time, and the closest I got was fanfiction. Now I actually got to read it, and believe me it was amazing. I think it was even better than I expected. I'll soon post a full review for the book on here, so I'll keep it at this for now. But just this book on it's own already made March a great reading month. (5 stars)

That was it for this month! I hope you enjoyed this list of books I read. I'm already looking forward to sharing what I have read in April.

Love,

Kirsten
